"Searching For The Silence"- Reading response

This reading gave a lot more insight and detail into Cage's life. I really enjoyed learning about him as I do see how his creations paved the way for the music we listen to today. Especially the introduction of sampling, I personally listen to rap, R&B, and hip-hop fairly exclusively, and these genres love to make use of samples to mix up their pieces.

I really appreciate the work Cage did for the industry, however, when we first listened to 4:33 in class I definitely did not consider it music, and now I am skeptical. I see Cage's intention and how the silence and background noises in itself make up the composition and created art, but calling in music does seem slightly far-fetched to me still.

Learning about his life definitely gave me a new perspective on his pieces, it is so sad that so many artists are made fun of and their work is disregarded until much later in their lives or in some cases not until after they've left this world. Cage wanted to create uniqueness and variety in a world filled with a lot of the same creations with slight variation. Cage thought out of the box and expanded the minds of so many, which in turn molded the music industry into what it is now.

Although I still wouldn't call 4:33 music, it is art and it is certainly a unique experience. Cage has expanded what I think about sound and how it can transport people.
